Do you know a Sociopath?
According to Martha Stout in her book The Sociopath Next Door published in 2005, 4% of the population have Sociopathic Tendencies. These people are excellent actors and lack a conscience, guilt, love, warmth, genuine closeness, or responsibility.
Six Signs of a Sociopath
Hypnosis has been used for hundreds of years to control pain. Historically it has been used for setting fractures and amputating limbs. Within the last century thousands of operations have been performed using Hypnotherapy, its use in Chronic Pain Management, labour through Hypnotic Birthing and for dental treatment is on the increase.
At Hypnotherapy for Health we utilise our knowledge of Advanced Healthcare and Prescribing to enhance the effectiveness of our Hypnotherapy.
Pain can be defined as an uncomfortable feeling or unpleasant sensation within the body. The presence of pain usually indicates that something is wrong. Pain can come on quickly or slowly, stay in one place or spread.
A simplistic way to think about pain is:
Mechanical stimulation of pain receptors in the skin or connective tissue.
Generates impulses which are transmitted by a peripheral nerve to the spinal cord.
The impulse is then transferred to dorsal horns of the spinal cord
The impulse is transported up the spinal cord to the brain and is perceived in the brain as a noxious or painful stimulus.
These impulses can be modified by drugs or neuro-mediators in the brain itself or as they travel; e.g. local anaesthetic blocks peripheral nerves; morphine turns down the transmission in the spinal cord and part of the brain. This is an oversimplification but provides a brief overview.
It can also be described as Acute or Chronic, Acute pain can be mild and last a moment or more severe and last weeks or months. Chronic Pain can last years, it can be associated worth a long term condition such as arthritis or can be without apparent cause called idiopathic pain.
Abuse can take many forms: Physical, Sexual, Domestic, Slavery, Discriminatory, Psychological, Financial, Organisational, Neglect, Omission, Self-neglect.
Often the most damaging and Long lasting is Psychological which can be brought about by the other types. Betrayal by another, particularly someone you should trust such as a child, relative relationship is devastating to the victim. Long after the perpetrator has gone Psychological damage remains.
Symptoms of Psychological problems can lay dormant for years then appear without apparent reason or cause;
They can manifest as Depression, Negativity, Guilt, Fear, Anger, Self-doubt, Disturbing dreams, Distrust and Relationship difficulties. These feelings can lead onto a number of psychological disorders such as addictions, over eating or phobias such as agoraphobia.
Psychological problems can also be exhibited as physical illnesses such as IBS and produce idiopathic pain. In extreme cases this can lead to self-harm and suicidal ideation.
In some cases victims are drawn to situations and relationships where they are vulnerable and become victims again. In other cases there is a dramatic power shift and they look to be dominant in a relationship which can lead them to being an abuser themselves in some ways.
Although in most cases of abuse, it is undeniable that something happened our memories of events long since past are often incomplete or clouded by time, experience and beliefs.
Forgiveness is often suggested as an ultimate solution, however I understand why a victim would not want to forgive an abuser, as doing so may in their mind condone the act. However the Oxford Dictionary and others defines Forgiveness as “Stop feeling angry or resentful” or “letting go of resentment” a much more healthy solution and one that doesn’t in any way condone the abuser or the behaviour.
Some therapies encourage the victims to recall and relive the memories, however this can cause a strong unpleasant reaction for the client.
At Hypnotherapy for Health we use a combination of Hypnotic techniques, relaxation and EMDR to allow the client to let go of resentment and free themselves from past traumas.
We offer a Dyslexia Screening service which will give a broad indication as to if you have; dyslexia, dyscalculia or other Hidden Disabilities we can then refer on for additional assessment to obtain a formal diagnosis and statementing. Screening is provided by our own trained assessors and regulated by Dyslexia Action (www.dyslexiaaction.org.uk)
We also offer hypnotherapy to offset some of the stressors associated with study for those individuals with hidden disabilities.
People born since 1945 are 10 times more likely to suffer from depression than those born before
The reason being (among others):
-a breakdown in the extended family
-a dispersal of communities
-an increased focus on material wealth
-an overwhelming prevalence of news media
-and an increase in focus on 'the self'.
Can hypnotherapy beat IBS?
Hypnotherapy appears to be an effective long-term treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with sufferers feeling the benefits for at least five years, new research claims.
More than 200 patients with IBS were monitored after undergoing gut-directed hypnotherapy, each recording their symptoms, quality of life and levels of anxiety and stress before and after treatment.
The researchers found that almost three-quarters (71%) of patients responded well to hypnotherapy and most did not deteriorate over time.
They concluded that "the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy appear to last at least five years", making it "a viable therapeutic option" for treating IBS.
The results of their study, published in the journal Gut, also showed that women were more likely to respond to hypnotherapy than men.
The research was carried out by a team at Withington Hospital in Manchester, where the UK's first NHS hypnotherapy unit has been established.
As many as one in five people in Britain goes on to develop IBS, with symptoms including stomach pain, diarrhoea and constipation.
The researchers said that around half the work done by gastroenterologists concerned IBS.
They also pointed out that conventional treatments for the condition did not always prove successful.
Using 204 completed questionnaires, the researchers were able to assess the effects of hypnotherapy immediately after and six years after hypnotherapy sessions lasting one hour for up to 12 weeks.
Among those who responded well, all patients registered a significant improvement in symptoms compared with before treatment.
They also found there was little difference in how the patients rated the improvement for more than five years after treatment.
There was also improvement in quality of life and levels of anxiety and depression, although this decreased over time.
However, patients said there took fewer drugs and did not need to see their doctors as often after having hypnotherapy.
The researchers maintained that the sustained improvements in most of the patients could not be attributed to other treatments - as less than one in 10 attempted alternatives after finishing hypnotherapy.
They said that while past research had demonstrated the benefits of hypnotherapy in the short term, their study showed that it also worked over longer periods.
"A potential criticism for the use of hypnotherapy as a treatment for IBS has been that it is costly to provide because of the demands on therapists' time.
"However, because of its sustained effects in the majority of patients, costs of treatment could be rapidly offset by the ensuing reduction in cost of medication and other healthcare demands," the report said.
